Getting Started: How to create a PXE booting client solution

1. Setup your server environment and network

We strongly recommend that all servers in the AnywhereTS solution are members of the same Domain. If you are using more than one Windows domain we recommend that you have Domain trusts in order to distribute the user rights correctly.

2. Decide where to Install AnywhereTS Admin

  • Operating system: Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista.
  • Hard disk space: At least 100 MB available.
  • The target computer should be member of the Windows domain that the terminal servers belong to or a mutual domain trust should have been defined.
  • The AnywhereTS administration computer will host the AnywhereTS database. This computer should be running all time in order for the AnywhereTS Control Panel to work.
  • If the target computer for AnywhereTS administration is not connected to the Internet, you first need to install and update .NET Framework 2.0 and SQL Express 2005. These components can be downloaded from the Microsoft website.

3. Install AnywhereTS Admin

Start the installation by running setup.exe

4. Update Windows

During the installation AnywhereTS might install components that need to be updated.
To update these, run Microsoft Update after the installation of AnywhereTS and before starting AnywhereTS. This step is essential in order for AnywhereTS to work if you are installing on a computer running Windows Vista.

5. Configure accounts and user rights

  • Create a domain group that all users that will use an AnywhereTS client are member of.
  • Make this Domain group a member of all Terminal servers local group "Remote Desktop Users".

On the server running AnywhereTS Admin you need to add the domain group to the local group “Remote Desktop Users” and also to the local group "SQLServer2005MSS$<your server name>$SQLEXPRESS".
The local group "Remote Desktop Users" is necessary on every server using any part of AnywhereTS Pro even if the server is not used as a Terminal Server.

NB. This applies even if you are running AnywhereTS on a Windows XP or Windows Vista.

6. Configure AnywhereTS Pro

  • Start AnywhereTS Admin
  • Enter your terminal services configuration. If you have external terminal servers, add the names of the terminal servers to the terminal server list.
  • Enter the paths to your TFTP server roots if you are not using the built in TFTP server. Note that if you are not using the built in TFTP server, you need to manually configure your TFTP and DHCP server(s) in order for AnywhereTS to work.
  • Enter your choice of DHCP server
  • Press Next/Finish
If you selected to use the internal TFTP or DHCP, you need to configure it:
  • To configure TFTP, enter the IP address used by your servers NIC that the TFTP service will be bound to. If your server has more then one NIC, enter the IP address used by the NIC connected to the network you will use for AnywhereTS.
  • Enter the DHCP options you plan to use. Note the addresses should be in the same network scope as the server NIC used by the TFTP service. If you use a different scope you will have problems accessing the TFTP server with your clients.
  • If you are using an external TFTP server you will not be able to use the built in DHCP.
  • Press Finish

7. Build a client image

Select menu Image - Configure network boot image…

8. Configure client PCs

  • Configure your client PCs to boot using PXE. If your client computers have the option to PXE boot in BIOS, enable this.
  • If your client computers do not have PXE boot option in BIOS, you have to create PXE boot media using the menu Tools - Creating PXE boot media. Once the media is created, insert the floppy or CD, in the client computer and boot.

9. Start clients

  • Boot your terminal client PCs
  • The clients will now show up in the admin tree in AnywhereTS Pro.
  • Press the refresh button to update the client view.

10. Administrate clients

You can now start administrating your AnywhereTS terminal clients.

  • Select clients in the admin tree and change the client properties.
New clients can also be manually added by selecting menu Client - Add Client.

11. Install AnywhereTS Control Panel

  • The AnywhereTS Control Panel can be installed on all Terminal Servers.
  • The AnywhereTS Control panel can be run by any user connecting via an AnywhereTS client.
  • The control panel enables users to change the client's audio volume, screen resolution, color depth and mouse speed. Some other options are also available as i.e. change the screen refresh rate. Currently the client will have to be restarted for the changes to take place.
  • To install the AnywhereTS Control Panel on the same computer as you have installed AnywhereTS Admin, select the AnywhereTS Control Panel Installer in the AnywhereTS group on the start menu.
  • To install the AnywhereTS Control Panel on a terminal server other than the one you have installed AnywhereTS Admin on, copy the Install subfolder from the AnywhereTS Program folder to the terminal server where you plan to install the AnywhereTS Control Panel and run Setup.exe. The location of the AnywhereTS program folder depends on where you installed AnywhereTS, but could i.e. be “C:\Program Files\AnywhereTS\Install”.
  • When installing the AnywhereTS Control Panel, we recommend you to install it for “all users”, as this option will not be available again without uninstalling and then reinstalling the AnywhereTS Control Panel.

12. Configure and run AnywhereTS Control Panel

  • The AnywhereTS Control Panel can only be run from AnywhereTS terminal clients.
  • If you are installing the AnywhereTS Control Panel on another computer than the one where you installed AnywhereTS Admin, you need configure the control Panel when starting it the first time. In order to do this, you need to be logged in as administrator. Start the AnywhereTS Control Panel (also works from a console session). Type in the name or IP of the computer where you installed AnywhereTS Admin.
